Congress Avenue · Sixth Street · Rainey Street · Second Street

The Capitol, live music on Sixth and Red River, and the Congress Avenue Bridge, where the bats take flight on summer evenings.

Congress Avenue runs from the Capitol down to Lady Bird Lake, past the historic Paramount Theatre. Sixth Street is the city’s best-known nightlife strip, and the Red River Cultural District, a few blocks east, packs in many of Austin’s live music clubs.

The Second Street District, by City Hall, has shops and restaurants, and Rainey Street, at downtown’s southeastern edge, is a row of old bungalows turned into bars. From spring into fall, crowds gather on and below the Congress Avenue Bridge at dusk to watch the bats emerge.
