A Victorian-era residence tucked among the office towers and state buildings just north of the Capitol, the Wahrenberger House is one of the few 19th-century homes still standing in this part of downtown Austin. It's a passing-by landmark rather than a ticketed attraction, so the thing to do is slow down on the sidewalk and take in the detailed woodwork and proportions that read very differently from everything built around it since.

Pennybacker Bridge Overlook

A short scramble up the rocky trail on the north side of Loop 360 brings you to a clifftop view of the burnt-orange steel arch of the Pennybacker Bridge spanning Lake Austin, with the surrounding Hill Country rolling off in every direction. Come toward sunset when the light warms the limestone and the water below, and expect company—it's a well-loved spot, so the small pullout parking fills quickly.
