Santa Rita No. 1 is the original oil derrick from the 1923 West Texas well whose strike fed the Permanent University Fund and reshaped the finances of the University of Texas, now reassembled here on the Austin campus near MLK Boulevard. Walk up to it and the first thing you'll notice is the scale of the old wooden-and-steel rigging, a working relic that connects a quiet corner of campus to the oil boom that bankrolled much of the university system.

Pennybacker Bridge Overlook

A short scramble up the rocky trail on the north side of Loop 360 brings you to a clifftop view of the burnt-orange steel arch of the Pennybacker Bridge spanning Lake Austin, with the surrounding Hill Country rolling off in every direction. Come toward sunset when the light warms the limestone and the water below, and expect company—it's a well-loved spot, so the small pullout parking fills quickly.
