The Cathedral of Junk is exactly what it sounds like: a towering, walk-through sculpture in a South Austin backyard, built over decades by Vince Hannemann from donated bicycle parts, hubcaps, bottles, signs, and salvage of every kind. Visits are by appointment only since it's on private residential property, so call ahead before you go, and it's customary to bring a small donation or a contribution of junk.

Blanton Museum of Art, on the University of Texas campus, holds one of the largest university art collections in the country, spanning European paintings, modern and contemporary American work, and a deep collection of Latin American art. The first thing many visitors notice is Ellsworth Kelly's "Austin," a free-standing stone building with luminous colored-glass windows that sits just outside the main galleries.
